Earring Tips and Tricks

Welcome to our first "What's New!" Post! You may have seen these earrings posted on our Facebook and Instagram -- here are some tips and tricks to making Shrink Art dangle earrings!

Pick Your Art Medium

I made doubles of each earring set. The black and white set is with the Sharpie Creative Marker, and with the colored earring set I made one in permanent marker, and the other using colored pencil. Each colored earring set has a slightly different look and pros & cons.

Permanent Marker: Lights up from behind to look stained-glass-like! In normal light, it can look darker than colored pencil.

Colored Pencil: Color shrinks as is as vibrant as intended but doesn't have the cool stained-glass light up effect.

Punching Holes

It's sometimes easy to forget to leave space for the holes (and the borders that are needed around the holes!) --so I'm here to help you remember --leave space for the punch holes and their borders! I've learned this the hard way many times. I did not with my first set, and you can see the difference in the examples below.

Border Rule of Thumb (for punched holes)

Here is what my drawing set up looked like on my second round of earrings with proper punch hole space during the drawing process.

As a general rule of thumb, always make sure your punch hole has a border no less than the diameter (or width) of the punch hole. Otherwise during the shrinking process, it can become too thin and break.
